How do you balance lifting, movement, and recovery?

What if the thing holding back your progress isn't that you're doing too little…but that you're not giving yourself enough time to recover? 💜

If you follow me, you probably see a LOT of lifting. But here's something you might not realize: I take a rest day every 2–3 days. On purpose!

And those days don't necessarily mean sitting on the couch (although sometimes they absolutely do!). They might look like a gentle walk, some mobility work, a little yoga, or just moving my body in ways that feel good.

Because rest and recovery aren't interruptions to your training. They're PART of your training.

Here's something worth understanding: when we lift weights, we're creating a stimulus for our bodies to adapt. But those adaptations? They happen between workouts, when we give our bodies the time, energy, and resources to respond.

More isn't automatically better. And harder isn't always smarter.

I've been reminded of this firsthand lately as I navigate some Achilles tendon pain. It's meant adjusting certain movements, slowing down a bit, and occasionally doing less than I'd planned.

And you know what? That's okay.

The goal isn't to see how much your body can tolerate. It's to give your body what it needs to get stronger.

Especially as we get older, I think it's worth becoming more intentional about how we balance challenge with recovery. Not because we're suddenly fragile (we're not!), but because training is only one piece of the puzzle.

Sleep matters. Nutrition matters. Stress matters. And so does giving ourselves permission to back off when our bodies are asking for it.

That doesn't mean we need to be afraid of pushing ourselves. Progressive overload is still the name of the game when we're building strength! But knowing when to push and when to pull back? That's a skill worth developing, too.

So here's your reminder:

You don't have to earn your rest. You don't need to make up for a missed workout. And taking a day (or several!) to recover doesn't erase the work you've already done.

Sometimes, the most productive thing you can do for your fitness is a little less. ❤️‍🩹

I'm curious: Do you find it harder to stay consistent with your workouts, or to give yourself permission to rest?
